I am a 3rd generation Chinese-American who loves the raw beauty of calligraphy. Growing up in the suburban East Coast included piano, ballet and after-school sports. I learned how to make a note sing and carve a poetic gesture. Accuracy involves nuance. It is with a light or lumbering touch combined with a thud or whisper that moves in quick or iceberg slow. Painting is like that.
My oil paintings combine lyrical abstraction and representation. They are portraits of nature. I find that traditional landscape paintings do not reveal the vitality that interests me. I am intrigued by the power of the ocean, the potent renewal of spring, and the quiet grace of a tree. The artists that influence my work include Van Gogh and Joan Mitchell. My Chinese work ethic insists on structure. The American in me thrives on rhythm and movement. My paintings are born from this.
